General

Can I bring a non-cycling partner on the tour?

Yes! Non-riding partners are welcome to join our tours. We offer activities for them to explore the local area, relax, or enjoy cultural experiences while the riders are on the road. Non-riders are transported in our van and usually dropped off at the hotel before the cyclists arrive, giving them time to enjoy the hotel amenities or surroundings. We ensure they feel included in the overall experience.

Are bikeNOW Europe tours competitive or race-focused?

No, our tours are not competitive events. The focus is on enjoying the journey, taking in the scenery, and exploring new places. Riders set their own pace, with guides leading and following the group. You’ll naturally form smaller groups along the route, with regular stops for cafes and photos. There’s no pressure to ride faster than you're comfortable with—our pace is relaxed and suits everyone.

What level of fitness is required for a bikeNOW Europe tour?

Our tours cater to a wide range of fitness levels. While some routes are more challenging, we ensure that the pace and difficulty are suitable for the group. If you’re comfortable cycling for several hours a day and enjoy moderate physical activity, you’ll be just fine. We also offer e-bikes for those looking for an easier ride.

How do you select routes for the tours?

We carefully design each route with a balance of scenic beauty, cultural highlights, and rider enjoyment in mind. Our routes blend iconic tourist spots with hidden gems, ensuring you experience the best of the region. We also take into account the difficulty level to match the abilities and preferences of the group, so everyone has a rewarding ride.

How do you create a sense of community during your tours?

We foster a family-like atmosphere on all our tours. Our small group sizes encourage riders to connect, share stories, and support each other along the way. Whether you’re stopping for a coffee break or celebrating a completed climb, the camaraderie among participants is one of the most memorable aspects of our tours.

Do you offer tours outside of Europe?

Currently, our focus is on providing exceptional cycling experiences across Europe. However, we are always exploring new destinations and may expand in the future. Stay tuned for updates as we continue to grow our offerings!

Pre-Tour & Packing

What training should I do before the tour?

It’s a good idea to start building your cycling endurance a few weeks before the tour. Aim for regular rides that gradually increase in distance and duration, focusing on both flat and hilly terrain. If possible, try to cycle 2-3 times per week to build stamina. Incorporating core and leg strengthening exercises will also help improve your stability and comfort on the bike. Remember, the goal is to feel comfortable riding for several hours a day at a relaxed pace—our guides will ensure you're supported throughout the tour.

How should I pack my bike if I’m bringing my own?

If you're bringing your own bike, it’s important to pack it securely to avoid damage during travel. We recommend using a hard-shell bike case or a padded soft case. Be sure to remove the pedals, handlebars, and wheels before packing them inside. Use bubble wrap or foam padding to protect delicate parts. If you’re unsure and located in Melbourne, visit our South Melbourne store bikeNOW to help with disassembly and packing, alternatively, your local bike shop can. Once you arrive, our team can assist with reassembly and safety checks before you hit the road.

What should I pack for a bikeNOW tour?

We recommend bringing comfortable cycling gear, including padded shorts, jerseys, and a light jacket for cooler or rainy weather. Don’t forget your helmet, sunglasses, and cycling shoes. We also suggest packing casual clothes for evenings and non-riding activities, along with essentials like sunscreen, water bottles, and any personal items you may need. If you're not bringing your own bike, we've got everything covered for your ride.

Travel

Should I bring a cycling GPS when travelling?

Bringing a cycling GPS is highly recommended. While our tours offer full guidance, a GPS lets you track your performance, control your pacing, and also serves as a useful backup if you choose to ride ahead. We provide detailed route maps that can be downloaded to your GPS on the day of the ride. Just ensure it’s fully charged before each ride.

What precautions should I take when travelling with my bike?

Before travelling, double-check that your bike is in good working order. Pack it securely using a bike case, and ensure all parts are well-protected with padding, especially fragile components like the derailleur and brake levers. It’s also wise to deflate your tyres slightly before flying, as changes in air pressure can cause them to expand. If possible, have a tracking tag in your luggage for added security. Lastly, confirm your travel insurance covers your bike, just in case any damage or loss occurs.

When should I arrive for the tour start date?

We recommend arriving at least one day before your tour’s official start. This gives you time to acclimate, unpack your bike (if you’ve brought one), and get settled. Arriving early also helps ensure that any travel delays don’t interfere with the start of your tour. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to explore the local area before the cycling adventure begins.

What are your tips for travelling with a bike?

Traveling with your bike can be hassle-free with proper preparation. Start by investing in a quality bike bag or case for protection during transit. We recommend the EVOC Bike Travel Bag for its secure design and dedicated space for wheels, or a Scicon soft case for excellent protection and compact storage. Pack essential tools like a multi-tool, tire levers, and a mini pump, and check your airline’s bike policy for fees or requirements. Label your case with contact details and pack spare parts, such as an extra tube, to avoid issues abroad. Contact our retail showroom for assistance and a special discount as a bikeNOW Europe client.

On-Tour

Is safety a concern during the tour?

Safety is our top priority. All our guides are experienced cyclists with extensive knowledge of the routes, traffic patterns, and local conditions. We choose quieter, scenic roads to avoid heavy traffic and provide a support vehicle for emergencies. We also brief participants on safe cycling practices and local road regulations before each ride. Additionally, we carry first aid kits and have protocols in place to ensure everyone’s well-being on and off the bike.

What is the average ride distance and difficulty level?

Our daily rides typically range from 60 to 100 kilometres, depending on the day's route and the group's ability. We offer a mix of terrain, including flat sections, rolling hills, and mountain climbs, to provide a well-rounded experience. For those seeking extra challenges, there are always opportunities for additional climbs or distances, but we ensure that every ride is enjoyable for cyclists of all levels.

One of the standout climbs on the bikeNOW Europe tour is the iconic Passo dello Stelvio in Italy. Known for its dramatic switchbacks and breathtaking views, this challenging yet rewarding climb is a favourite among cyclists. It’s an unforgettable experience, whether you’re riding for the achievement or the panoramic views at the summit. Of course, we tailor our routes to match your experience level, offering both easier climbs and more challenging ones.

What if I’m uncomfortable riding downhill?

If descending isn’t your favourite, don’t worry! Our tours are flexible, and we always prioritise rider comfort and safety. You can take your time on descents or even ride in the support vehicle during particularly steep sections. We’re here to support you, and no one is pushed to ride faster or more aggressively than they’re comfortable with.

What happens if I have mechanical issues with my bike during the tour?

Our experienced mechanics are on hand to address any bike-related problems promptly. They can assist with on-the-road repairs, like fixing flat tyres or adjusting gears. For more complex issues, we’ll take you to a nearby bike shop or provide a replacement bike to ensure you can continue the tour without disruption.

What are my options for non-riding days?

We offer rest days during the tour, giving you time to relax and explore the local area. You can visit nearby towns, cultural sites, and scenic viewpoints, or enjoy the local cuisine. Many regions have historical tours, museums, vineyards, or beaches to explore. Our guides are happy to suggest activities based on your interests. For those who prefer to keep riding, we also offer Trophy Rides on REST (ride extra steep terrain) days!

Bike-Specific

Do you offer eBikes for hire?

Yes, we have a limited range of eBikes available to hire. Please express your interest using our booking page, and select eBike hire. Yes, we have eBikes available for hire on all our tours. eBikes are a great option for those who want extra support on climbs or prefer a more relaxed pace. They make cycling accessible to riders of all fitness levels and allow you to enjoy the tour without worrying about fatigue. Our eBikes are high-quality and well-maintained, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

Are carbon wheels suitable for descents?

Carbon wheels offer excellent lightweight and aerodynamic benefits, especially for climbing. However, on long, steep descents, rim brake carbon wheels can overheat, affecting braking performance and potentially causing tyre issues. To avoid this, use intermittent braking to allow cooling. For riders using disc brakes, carbon wheels perform exceptionally well. Leading brands like Zipp, Enve, and Mavic offer advanced options. We advise caution on longer descents and recommend frequent stops to prevent overheating.

Should I service my bike before the tour?

Absolutely! If you're bringing your own bike, it’s essential to have it serviced before the tour to ensure it's in top condition. A thorough check of the brakes, gears, tyres, and chain will help avoid any mechanical issues during the tour. A well-serviced bike not only rides better but also gives you peace of mind, allowing you to fully enjoy the experience.

I’m uncomfortable on my bike—does it matter?

Yes, comfort is crucial for enjoying your ride. If you’re uncomfortable on your bike, it can make even a short ride challenging. We recommend having a professional bike fitting before the tour to ensure your bike suits your body and riding style. Small adjustments to the saddle height, handlebar position, or pedals can make a big difference. If you're unsure, we can assist with a fitting before the tour starts or help adjust your setup along the way.

Can I hire a bike for the tour?

Yes, we offer a range of high-quality bikes for hire on all our tours, including road bikes, and eBikes. Hiring a bike saves you the hassle of transporting your own, and we ensure all rental bikes are professionally serviced and ready for the journey. You can also arrange bikes from local operators (excluding the Tour de France period). Please express your interest in bike hire using our booking page.

What type of bike do I need for the tour?

For our tours, a lightweight road bike is ideal, as it will make climbing easier and provide a smoother ride on long distances. If you prefer a more relaxed experience, a touring or hybrid bike may be more comfortable. For those new to road biking or looking for extra assistance, we also offer eBikes for hire. It’s important that your bike fits well and is suited to the type of riding you’ll be doing on tour.

Are disc brake-equipped road bikes good for climbing?

Yes, disc brake-equipped road bikes are a great option for climbing. Disc brakes offer superior braking performance, especially on steep descents or in wet conditions. Their consistent stopping power gives riders better control and confidence during challenging climbs and technical descents. While they may add a bit of extra weight compared to rim brakes, the added safety and performance benefits make them an excellent choice for varied terrain.
